Abstract From the Canadian patent

A single guide wire system for use in continually directional drilling of boreholes, includes a guidewire extending generally parallel to the desired path of the borehole (14). The guidewire (20) is connected at a first end (20) to one side of a reversible source of direct current (30), and at a second end (22) to ground (24). A second side of the DC source is also connected to ground (32). A known current flow in a first direction for a first period of time and in a second direction for a second period of time produces corresponding static magnetic fields in the region of the borehole (14). The vector components of the fields are measured in the borehole by a 3-axis magnetometer and, …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 8, 1995 and granted October 9, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 8, 2015.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 8, 2017.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
