The method for establishing secure communications between users (A B and C) using a public key encryption/decryption system involves the following steps. Centre C generates a pair of keys one of which is a public key. User A generates a pair of keys one of which is a public key (Pa), but User A's public key is encrypted with Centre C's public key (Pcks). User A transmits to Centre C his public key (Pa) encrypted with Centre C's public key (Pcks). Centre C decrypts User A's public key and if User A is certified by Centre C, transmits back to User A his public key (Pa) encrypted with Centre C's key. This method allows for centralized control over users' public keys.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 20, 1997 and granted June 6, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 20, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 20, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
