This invention concerns a process to obtain isophorone from acetone; characterized differently when operating (i) in liquid phase in the presence of a magnesium and aluminum double oxide formulated Mgl-x AlxO 1+x or (ii) in gas or liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst of generic formula (I): ¢Mg2+)1-x (Al3+)x(OH-)x!! x- (H2 O)n (I) with 0.20 x 0.33 and n < 1. The advantage of this process is that it can be done in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst that has good selectivity and can be largely recycled.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 27, 1997 and granted July 18, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 27, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 27, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
