Abstract From the Canadian patent

The loss in delivered capacity (fade) after cycling non-aqueous rechargeable lithium batteries can be reduced by incorporating a small amount of certain additive compounds in the battery. The additive compound comprises boron, oxygen, and organic end groups that are chemically compatible with the battery components. The structure of the additive compound contains a boroxine (BO)3 ring. The invention is particularly suited to lithium ion batteries. Trimethoxyboroxine and trimethylboroxin are particularly effective additives. Preferably, the additive compound is dissolved in the electrolyte.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed January 31, 1997 and granted July 16, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 31, 2017.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 31, 2019.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
