A method for increasing the production of methane from a subterranean coal formation by chemically stimulating the formation of cleats in the coal formation in order to facilitate removal of formation water and increase the rate of methaneproduction from the coal formation. The method comprises injecting an aqueous oxidant solution into the coal formations to stimulate the formation of cleats in the coal formation; and thereafter producing methane from the coal formations at an increased rate. The aqueous oxidant solution preferably comprises hypochlorite metaic salts of hypochlorous acid, hydrogen peroxide ozone, oxygen and combinations thereof.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 30, 1997 and granted July 23, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 30, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 30, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
