The invention provides a speech coding apparatus by which good sound quality can be obtained even when the bit rate is low. The speech coding apparatus includes an excitation quantization circuit which quantizes an excitation signal using a plurality of pulses. The position of at least one of the pulses is represented by a number of bits determined in advance and the amplitude of the pulse is determined in advance depending upon the position of the pulse.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 25, 1996 and granted March 27, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 25, 2016.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 25, 2018.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
