A heat exchanger includes a plurality of flexible spiral tubing coils (12, 14, 16, 18, ...) hydraulically connected to inlet and outlet manifolds (24, 22) mounted in spaced parallel, relationship to each other in vertical array within a tank. The coils are alternately wound clockwise and counterclockwise and, the innermost 12B, 14B, ...) and outermost (12A 14A, ...) turns, of the spiral coils are selectively connected to the appropriate manifolds, so that the flow in one coil runs counter to those adjacent to it, resulting in a reduction of localized temperature gradients due to a temperature averaging effect in the fluid within the tank which lies between adjacent coils.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 23, 1995 and granted May 8, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 23, 2015.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 23, 2017.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
