An illuminated sign, such as an emergency exit sign, includes a stencil in which a pair of oppositelydirected, arrow-shaped through-holes are disposed. At least one arrow-shaped snap-in element is provided which is inserted into either of the through-holes to block the passage of light therethrough. The snap-in element includes elastic spring fingers having hookshaped ends adapted to engage a rear end of a ridge which borders a rear side of a respective through-hole thereby yieldably retaining the snap-in element within the through-hole. All of the spring-fingers are movable simultaneously through a respective through-hole.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 26, 1996 and granted May 30, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 26, 2016.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 26, 2018.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
