Abstract From the Canadian patent

The present invention describes a process for the purification and crystallisation of Iopamidol, wherein 1-propanol, or 2-propanol is added to an aqueous solution ofIopamidol followed if necessary, by azeotropic distillation to reduce the quantity of water in relation to the quantity of propanol and thereby ensure an high yield. The, aqueous solution can be prepared either by the dissolution of crude Iopamidol inwater or directly from the reaction in which the Iopamidol is formed. The present invention presents advantages for the routine production of Iopamidol since the crystallisation is straightforward to perform can be easily controlled and is, reproducible at an industrial scale.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 6, 1996 and granted October 16, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 6, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 6, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
