Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method of producing and purifying poly-.beta.-14-N-acetylglucosamine(p- GlcNAc)polysaccharide species and their derivatives is described. The polysaccharides produced by this method are free of proteins and , substantially free of single amino acids and other organic and inorganic , contaminants. These p-GlcNAc polysaccharides may be used commercially by the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries in slow drug delivery systems, cell encapsulation systems, and treatments for the prevention of postsurgical adhesions. The figure shows the chemical structure of 100 % p-GlcNAc wherein "n" is an integer from about 4,000 to about 150,000.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 1, 1994 and granted April 30, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 1, 2014.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 1, 2016.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
