A well arrangement is used wherein the production wells are generally horizontai positioned low in the reservoir and arranged generally perpendicularly to a laterally extending combustion front. The combustion front is propagated by a row of vertical air injection wells completed high in the reservoir. The open production wells function to cause the combustion front to advance along their lengths. The process is characterized by a generally upright combustion front having good vertical and lateral sweep.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 15, 1996 and granted August 8, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 15, 2016.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 15, 2018.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
