A biosensing meter (22) receives a sample strip (10) that includes electrically isolated sense and excitation electrodes (12,14) bridged by a reaction zone. When a drop of biological sample fluid is placed in the reaction zone a plurality of fail/safe tests are performed. A drop size test is performed by a circuit that detects the size of the drop placed in the reaction zone. The circuit both detects that a drop has been placed in the reaction zone and further measures a test current level after a delay, to determine that the drop size is sufficient to enable hydration of reactants in the reaction zone.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 13, 1994 and granted November 16, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 13, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 13, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
