Disclosed herein is an improved gas phase process for the selective eposidation of non-allylic olefins wherein the expoxidation is carried out in the presence of certain inert paraffin hyfrocarbons. Such hydrocarbons possess higher heat capacities as compared to other materials, e.g. nitrogen, argon, methane and helium typically used as inert diluents in olefin epoxidations. The disclosed process is particularly useful for the continuous manufacture of 3,4-epoxy-1-butene from 1,3-butadiene.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 21, 1994 and granted March 30, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 21, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 21, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
