A fiber is coated with a soluble material by passing the fiber vertically through an applicator made from a tube that is mounted vertically and that has a constriction with an inner diameter at its narrowest point from about 50 to about 500 micronsgreater than the diameter of the fiber. The inner diameter of the constriction increases gradually above the narrowest point to the top of the constriction and below thenarrowest point to the bottom of the constriction. A solution of the soluble material is fed into the constriction through a sidearm to form a column of solution through which the fiber passes as it is being coated.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 29, 1994. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 29, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 29, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
