Abstract From the Canadian patent

Radiation-absorptive materials suitable for fabrication, into packages sheets, inks, paints, decorative surface treatments, lotions, creams, and gels are disclosed. The materials exploit certain optical properties associated with uniform; spherical, nanosize particles to provide complete radiation absorption, over a selected bandwidth at low, concentration. One type of particle exhibits an "absorption edge" at a chosen wavelength, transmitting radiation whose wavelength exceeds the characteristic bandgap wavelength while, effectively absorbing all radiation with wavelengths smaller than that minimum. Another type of particle exhibits "optical resonance," which causes radiation of a …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 27, 1994. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 27, 2014.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 27, 2016.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
