Method for treatment of a patient having a normal level of activity of a naturally occurring protein or having a condition, characterized by the presence of an elevated or reduced level of that natural protein. The method includes administering to the patient nucleic acid which encodes an agonist or inhibitory polypeptide of the biological activity of the natural protein or of a, naturally occurring effector which affects the biological activity of that natural protein.
