This invention involves a process for manufacturing a normally solid perfluoroalkyl bromide by gas-phase thermal bromination of a perfluoroalkyl idodide (C10 or greater). The process takes place in the presence of a normally fluid perfluoroalkyl bromide. In this way post-treatment operations (iodine reduction decantation, neutralization-washing) can be performed at room temperature.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 14, 1994 and granted July 14, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 14, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 14, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
