Abstract From the Canadian patent

An improved Surface-Enhanced, Raman Optical Data Storage System (SER-ODS) is disclosed. In the improved system entities capable of existing in multiple reversible states are present on the storage device. Such entities result in changed Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (12) (SERS) when localized state changes are effected in less than all of the entities. Therefore by changing the state of entities in, localized regions of a storage device the, SERS emissions in such regions will be changed. When a write-on device is, controlled by a data signal such localized, regions of changed SERS emissions will correspond to the data written on the, device. The data may be read by illuminating the …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 5, 1992 and granted December 16, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 5, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 5, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
