A control method and architecture is described for an ATM network carrying connections data traffic. The method is capable of integrating connectionoriented as well as connectionless traffic. The method takes advantage of the quasi-deterministic nature of the traffic emanating from a source that is being shaped by the leaky bucket shaping algorithm. Alternative methods are provided if such a shaping algorithm is not provided by the CPE which methods still guar-antee performance that equals or exceeds shared media networks such as FDDI. Hardware and software embodiments of the methods are disclosed. The invention is particularly applicable to LANs and hubs.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 25, 1994. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended July 25, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 25, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
