Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and apparatus for improving disk performance during partial stripe write operations in a computer system having a disk array subsystem utilizing parity fault tolerance technique. When a partial stripe write generation is begun, the method determines if the area or stripe where the write is to occur is unused space in the file system. If not the partial, stripe write operation is performed using a preceding read operation to read the current data and parity information from the disk as would normally be done. Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 18, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended December 18, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 18, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
