Abstract From the Canadian patent

A self oscillating power converter utilizing a pair of MOSFET transistor switches in a half bridge configuration wherein the junction of the two transistors is coupled to a reactive network which in turn is connected to an output rectifier. The gate-to-drain inter-electrode capacitance of the switching transistors serves as the sole means of sustaining oscillations. Oscillations are started at the gate-to-source electrodes of the transistors by a startup circuit. The frequency of oscillation is determined by the gate-to-source capacitance of the transistors and the inductance of the drive transformer which couples the source-to-gate electrodes of the transistors to each other. The drive …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 26, 1994 and granted September 29, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 26, 2014.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 26, 2016.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
