A cardiac massage apparatus (20) and a drive system (100) therefor are disclosed. The massage apparatus (20) comprises a cup (30) having a liner (50) that is connected within the cup (30) at its upper (32) and lower (34) ends. Dimensions defining an optimum cup (30) shape as a function of ventricular length are disclosed wherein the heart remains within the cup (30) when mechanically activated.
