A laparoscope assembly has a miniature video camera (40 42), mounted either proximally or distally in its insertion tube (12) and has an optical fiber bundle (30) that extends to the distal end (14) of the insertion tube from a light source (24) which can be incorporated in a video processor (20). The light source can be formed of one or more low-wattage metal halide discharge lamps (26), for example, 20 watts, with an ellipsoidal reflector (28) to concentrate the visible light from the lamp onto the proximal end of the optical fiber bundle (30). The lamp (26) produces a balanced white visible light but very little infrared.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 21, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 21, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 21, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
