An error detector circuit, and an associated method is, disclosed for a discrete receiver. The error detector circuit indicates bad frames of binary information signals which contain distorted bits of data in numbers so great as to prevent a convolutional decoder from generating, accurately, a decoded signal. When bit errors are detected in numbers beyond a first preselected value of the signal quality of a received signal combined with the detected number of bit errors forms a signal beyond a second preselected value, a bad frame is indicated.

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 23, 1993 and granted April 28, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 23, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 23, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
