Abstract From the Canadian patent

The invention is directed to an oil filter cartridge containing a sealed outlet orifice which can be opened to allow for efficient oil recovery. An oil filter cartridge with an outlet valve is considered to be part of the claimed invention. The oil filter cartridge with attached valve is particularly beneficial, for use on marine engines where quarters are cramped and the chance for water pollution due to oil spill is great.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 25, 1994 and granted February 13, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 25, 2014.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 25, 2016.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
