Abstract From the Canadian patent

The drugs of choice for treating intra-abdominal sepsis caused by infection with Gram negative bacteria include .beta.-lactams such as cefoxitin. However unless the drugs are, administered within 8 to 12 hours post-infection the, infecting microbes rapidly gain entry to and reside in cells of the reticuloendothelial system, where the microbes appear to become shielded from further drug action. It has been found that a liposomal cefoxitin formulation is effective in reducing the bacterial counts and the mortality of animals suffering from intra-abdominal Gram negative sepsis. The preferred liposome is phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine in the molar ratio of from 9.5:0.5 to 1:1.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 4, 1994 and granted October 3, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 4, 2014.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 4, 2016.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
