A light-scattering coating comprising lightscattering particles, such as alumina, dispersed in a silica matrix is formed by applying to the filter a silicone solution in which is dispersed colloidal silica and the light-scattering particles to a suitable substrate and then pyrolyzing the dispersion at high temperature to drive off the organic components and form the silica matrix. This coating is hard and abrasion resistant and is useful for reflectors lamps, and lenses.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 3, 1994. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended March 3, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 3, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
