The present invention relates to the direct electrolysis of tall oil soap (TOS) to produce crude tall oil (CTO). An aqueous tall oil soap solution (22) generated in a kraft wood-pulping process is placed in contact with an anode (34) in an electrolytic cell wherein the tall oil soap is disassociated to form crude tall oil and free sodium ions. The sodium ions migrate through a membrane (36) to associate with hydroxide ions formed in a cathode chamber (38) to form NaOH, which may optionally be recycled to the kraft pulping process as a make-up chemical for lost sodium. The crude tall oil is recovered from the electrolyzed tall oil solution for further refinement. Optionally, the tall oil …

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 3, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended August 3, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 3, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
