The method utilizes zone melting purification of lactide by creating a melted zone in a solid mixture of the lactide and impurities by heating a narrow zone of the solid mixture and carrying away the impurities in the melted zone by moving the narrow zone of heating to an adjacent zone in the solid mixture to create a new melted zone.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 11, 1994 and granted August 13, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 11, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 11, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
