A video signal compressor includes apparatus for generating motion vectors for respective blocks of video data. Ones of the motion vectors (other than those which provide direction to co-located blocks in other frames) are determined to be candidates to conversion to vectors which do provide direction to co-located blocks. However, conversion is precluded if the vector is determined to be correlated with one of the neighboring motion vectors.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 27, 1994 and granted July 15, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 27, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 27, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
