A transmission system using multicarrier modulation applies FECC (forward error correcting code) coding and codeword interleaving differently to input signals from a plurality of different data channels to produce encoded data signals having different reliabilities and different coding delays. Bits of encoded data signals having relatively less delay are allocated to carriers that are subject to relatively more attenuation and/or channel noise, and hence that are allocated fewer bits for transmission in each symbol period to, reduce the effects of impulse noise. The data channels can comprise video data, and, control channels transmitted on an ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) …

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 12, 1994 and granted June 16, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 12, 2014.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 12, 2016.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
