Abstract From the Canadian patent

The combination of a portable computer and hand set for dictation and transcription. The hand set has a digital signal processor that compresses voice samples after voice signals have been converted from analog to digital. The digital signal processor is connected to a serial communication link through which communication can be held directly with a portable computer. Both voice samples and control data are carried by the same communication link. Controls are provided in the hand set for carrying out the normal dictation operations.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 13, 1993 and granted July 27, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 13, 2013.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 13, 2015.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
