A plastics core (32) and a plastics sheath (35) of an optical fibre cable are formed simultaneously by a single shot extrusion process in which the plastics flow is partitioned such that a weak joint is formed between the sheath and core. This allows easy separation of the sheath to access fibres (34) within the cable.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 8, 1992 and granted September 7, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 8, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 8, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
