An exemplary packet processing apparatus where a large number of comparisons can be made concurrently in bit-parallel fashion by partitioning thecomparison functionality to two optoelectronic integrated circuits and, interconnecting the two circuits using free space optics. Illustratively different, embodiments are used to perform one-to-many or many-to-one comparisons by developing multiple copies of one value for concurrent comparison with many possible values. The invention is more generally applicable to other comparison applications where one-to-many or many-to-one comparisons are made.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 29, 1993 and granted September 9, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 29, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 29, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
