A novel process for the phosphorylation of insulin in which peptide is contacted with phosphorous oxychloride in an aqueous solvent is disclosed. Phosphorylated insulin with the ability to produce a higher degree of blood glucose control in the treatment of diabetes mellitus is obtained by this process. The phosphorylated insulin of the invention produces a significantly lower change in blood glucose per % change in insulin dose when compared to presently available insulin.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 26, 1992 and granted February 19, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 26, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 26, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
