A method and apparatus for drawing glass objects from glass feedstock, wherein a dimension of the glass object is measured on-line and controlled by a control structure which compensates for the deadtime between a change to the drawing speed and the measurement of the effect of that change to the measured dimension. The model which compensates for the deadtime is preferably nonlinear and, the control gains and model parameters are preferably continuously calculated during the drawing process. The invention is particularly applicable to drawing optical waveguide cane from optical waveguide preforms.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 18, 1993. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 18, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 18, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
