The present disclosure relates to the application of genetic engineering to provide artificial .beta. cells i.e. cells which can, secrete insulin in response to glucose. This is achieved preferably through the introduction of one or more genes selected from the insulin gene, glucokinase gene, and glucose tranporter gene so , as to provide an engineered cell having all three of these genes in a biologically functional and responsive configuration. Assays for detecting the presence of diabetes-associated antibodies in biological samples using these and other engineered cells expressing diabetes-associated epitopes are described. Also disclosed are methods for the large-scale production of …

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 2, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 2, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 2, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
