A method for making a sound-dampened automotive enclosure, such as an oil pan, having a metal constraining layer, a metal housing layer, and a viscoelastic layer sandwiched therebetween. In a preferred embodiment the, constraining layer and viscoelastic layer are between the housing layer and the die while the housing layer is being drawn. This results in a very close and snug fit between the layers, leading to enhanced sound-dampening effectiveness. The article thus produced is also disclosed.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 6, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended May 6, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 6, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
