A gasketed membrane electrode assembly for electrochemical fuel cells employs gasketing material at the periphery of the ion exchange membrane, rather than the membrane itself as a gasket. The gasketing material may be formed from an elastomeric material suitable for cold bonding or bonding by heat and pressure. A nonhydrophilic thermoplastic elastomer is the preferred gasketing material. The gasketed membrane electrode assembly provides a seal between the electrically conductive separator plates that is more effective and economical than assemblies employing the membrane itself as the gasketing material. In an alternative embodiment, a gasketed membrane assembly for use in the …

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 1, 1992 and granted April 7, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 1, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 1, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
