Abstract From the Canadian patent

A non-aqueous composition is provided herein for use as a waterproof coating for a printable substrate. The composition comprises a mixture of polyurethane and an oleoresinous varnish, preferably in a weight ratio of 1:16 to 1:10. It has been found that such waterproof coating imparts colour enrichment to the printed substrate relative to a printed substrate having only a varnish coating. The waterproof coating further imparts at least 35% higher gloss to the substrate relative to a printed substrate having only a varnish coating.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 16, 1991 and granted May 12, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 16, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 16, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
