Medical isotopes are produced using a low power low cost nuclear reactor which permits the use of all the fission products produced in the reactor. Medical isotope such as Molybdenum-99 are produced in a reactor operating at a power of 200 kilowatts. Medical isotopes can be produced from both the water boiler type reactor and the gas-cooled type reactor by using a homogeneous fissionable material for producing a fission product which can be separated filtered and purified for obtaining the medical isotopes.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 16, 1993. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 16, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 16, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
