Abstract From the Canadian patent

The present invention relates to an optical switch by means of which wavelength multiplexed optical signals (.lambda. i-.lambda. n) can be switched in an optically uninterrupted fashion through the switch. The switch is transparent to the bit rate and code format of the optical signals and comprises groups of a number (n) of tunable optical wavelength filters (39A1- 39An...39n1-39nN), preferably tunable laser amplifiers. Control means control the setting of the tunable wavelength filters as well as the settings of optical switching elements (45A-45N) so as to prevent two identical wavelengths from appearing simultaneously at the input and output links.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 20, 1991 and granted February 5, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 20, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 20, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
