The invention is a method for controlling the perfusion rate of bioreactor cultures of animal cells wherein the level of metabolic activity of the cells as reflectod by a drop in pH and as measured by a pH probe, is used to activate 1) the perfusion of fresh medium containing standard cell nutrients and experimentally determined concentrations of energy source(s) and buffer, into the bioreactor and 2) the removal of culture fluid, which is depleted of nutrients and contains waste products, from the bioreactor.

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 29, 1993. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 29, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 29, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
