Abstract From the Canadian patent

A database interface and associated communication program are installed at each node in a communication network. The database interface provides a translation between different record formats held in the databases at each node and a standardized record format used to communicate records among the nodes. The communication program provides a facility for transmitting and receiving records in standardized record format among the nodes. The communication program automatically transmits records which have been modified at one node to all other nodes which contain corresponding records thus maintaining current records at each node.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 22, 1993 and granted September 16, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 22, 2013.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 22, 2015.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
