A direct fingerprint image is formed by illuminating a transparent planar substrate (22) from one surface (26) with collimated light (20), the substrate (22) having pressed against the other surface (28) a fingerprint (30) to be imaged. Light striking the surface (26) against which ridges of the fingerprint (30) are in contact undergoes total internal reflection within the substrate (22) and causes a direct image of the fingerprint to be formed by generating fluorescent light within a planar fluorescent member (38).

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 20, 1991. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended December 20, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 20, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
