Abstract From the Canadian patent

A colouring agent is formed from glucan-containing yeast cell ghosts, which are substantially intact yeast cell walls, and a colour source. The colouring agent may be formed from natural substances and may be used to colour foodstuffs, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Yeast cell ghosts with less undesirable flavour and colour are produced by extracting yeast debris, having not more than 20% by weight solids content, with acid, treating the extracted debris with alkali, separating whole cells and leaving a residual material rich in disrupted but otherwise intact cell walls and bleaching the residual material.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 14, 1993. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 14, 2013.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 14, 2015.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
