Abstract, Optical Communication System with a Power Limiter for High-Energy Pulses, In optical communication systems with optical with optical amplifiers there is the danger of system components being damaged in the event of a break in the fiber-optic link e.g. due to fiber breakage. This can be explained by the emission of high-energy pulses. To prevent such pulses from propagating in the fiberoptic link, a power limiter which, by introducing attenuation, limits the optical power of the pulses to a value not dangerous to the system components is inserted in the fiber-optic link. The attentuation is provided by two-photon absorption. (Fig.1)

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 8, 1993. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 8, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 8, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
