A method of producing a marking on diamond pearl, precious or semi-precious stone. For producing the marking the re-, gion on the surface to be marked is irradiated with an ArF excimer laser whose output beam is passed through a mask which defines the marking. Identification or security marks may be created. The same process can be used to produce strong and durable extrusion dies having irregular cross sections and cross sections which vary with depth through the die material.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 9, 1991 and granted March 11, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 9, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 9, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
