Data is transmitted along a borehole containing a drill stem (2) by means of a transmitter (6) which converts electric data signals to acoustic signals propagating along he drill stern (2). The acoustic signals are converted back to electric form by a receiver (12) which also processes the signals. In the preferred form the signals are stored in a receiver memory (15) for subsequent retrieval using a pick-up tool (5) lowered into the borehole. The system is particularly useful in moving data past an obstruction such as a shut-in valve (4).

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 18, 1991 and granted July 23, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 18, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 18, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
