Abstract From the Canadian patent

Hydrogen is essentially removed from molten magnesium by the use of a degassing step, thereby substantially avoiding the formation of zirconium hydride when zirconium and silicon are added to the molten magnesium, after the degassing, in order to precipitate iron contamination in the magnesium as an intermetallic compound comprising Fe, Zr and Si; the ratio of the three metals in the intermetallic compound can vary over a wide range. By essentially avoiding the formation of slow-settling insoluble ZrH2 the iron , removal is more efficient and the settling of the insolubles is expedited. Also, the Fe and Si are more effectively and consistently precipitated.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 24, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended July 24, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 24, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
